Dr. Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed is a Professor at the Department of Architecture, BUET and holds a professional degree in architecture and a PhD from the renowned Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He has been involved in teaching and research for over 28 years and since then has become highly recognized for his work in the areas of environmental design in architecture. He specializes in Bioclimatic Urban Design and has special interests in Low Energy Buildings, High Performance Buildings and Sustainable Cities. His work is underpinned by the use of simulation techniques and theories that synergy design and research. Prof. Shabbir is a recipient of the 'Best Paper Award' at the Millennium Conference, PLEA 2000, hosted by the University of Cambridge, UK and recipient of 'FORMAS Award' from the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning in 2006. He has published papers on human comfort, urban micro climate and cities.
Professor Shabbir served as the Head of the Department of Architecture from July 2016 to July 2019. During his tenure he helped bring in policy changes supporting specializations in the programme, enhanced studio practice and developed strategies for close student mentorship, facilitated integration of technology in teaching and learning, in setting up digital fabrication lab, online course delivery and infrastructural development.

Strategic Planning and Innovation
Under the management and/ or during the tenure of Prof. Dr K Shabbir Ahmed as the Head of the Department of Architecture at BUET, the following activities and developments took place:
- development and implementation of specialized Divisions within the Department of Architecture, namely ‘Environment & Energy’, ‘Housing & Settlement’, ‘Urban Design and Landscape’, ‘History and Conservation’, ‘Construction & Technologies’, and ‘Synergy’.
- Development of Digital Fabrication Lab (FabLAB) at the Department of Architecture which was later augmented by funding support from the UGC. Architecture students could access laser cutters, multi axes CNC router and 3-D Printering facilities.
- New academia- industry collaboration contract signed with Akter Group in promoting student works of public interest through national exhibition and publication; and for supporting training on Product Design by international trainers.
- Automation and optimization of postgraduate admission procedure at the Department of Architecture, BUET enhancing division based selection method.
- New technical staff planning and reallocation completed, support staff recruitment processed; focusing on efficient student support and optimization of available resources at the Department of Architecture.
- New undergraduate sessional courses- ‘ARCH492: Algorithmic Thinking in Design’ and ‘Arch424: Construction and Materials’ was designed and duly approved as university courses for the B Arch programme by the Academic Council. The course ARCH 492 was introduced for the first time in the country, where scopes for coding and computational techniques in architectural design will be explored.
- Development of new courses for the postgraduate programme was initiated by the respective subject experts and were recently approved at the Faculty meeting, pending Academic Council approval. These are Arch 6501: Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Architecture, Arch6502: Interactive Technologies in Architecture, Arch6504: Making in Design and Arch6504:Construction Project Management.
- New close contact supervision and mentoring model was developed and successfully implemented, leading to better project outcomes and improved student performance for the graduating term of the B Arch programme.
- Development of health and well-being measures for the students and staff completed at the Department of Architecture, including safe drinking water, improved sanitary facilities and procurement of first aid logistics.
- Comprehensive Grading Policy (including Rubric Method) for evaluating graduating year student design project/ thesis was developed and implemented through the departmental Board of Undergraduate Studies (BUGS).
- Secured competitive funding and implemented HEQEP CP No-6041 Sub-Project titled: Development of ICT based teaching learning facilities at the Department of architecture BUET to enhance quality of Architecture Education in Bangladesh.
- New studio based post professional postgraduate programme for Architecture (M Arch) was designed and developed, was duly approved at BPGS and at the Faculty level, currently pending AC approval.
- Procurement of Google Virtual Reality (VR) Tool was initiated for the Department in view of introducing and integrating VR technologies in architecture aligning with 4th Industrial Revolution possibilities.

- Jointly submitted to Global Challenges Research fund (GCRF) for setting up ‘Co-creation for Urban Well-being Hub’. The intent of the proposed research hub complements and will help to inform, intergovernmental initiatives designed to support sustainable urbanization.
